I am easily distracted. And I don’t necessarily think that is a bad thing. Some of the most distracted people I know are very productive. Instead of describing myself as “easily distracted,” I prefer to think of myself as someone who enjoys letting the small things in. Concentration might very well be overrated. A bird’s song might interrupt my piano practice, but in a good way—-the bird’s song ends up lifting my spirits. As I sit at my piano composing new music, a beam of sunlight dances across the piano keys, and as I watch it, my musical idea changes direction. Very often, creative ideas come from the small distractions of daily living. So next time, instead of punishing yourself for feeling distracted, perhaps let those distractions in. You might be happily surprised where they lead.
I agree, Robin! Really, why should being observant and open to the moment be thought of in a negative way? While creating visual art, some of my favorite ideas came from “being distracted”. Also, long ago, I realized that my maximum focus capability was 45 minutes.
You have very high concentration and are disciplined. Your concentration is generally at a higher level than most people in this world, from my perspective of the world in general.
