Recognized as a national historic site, the Presby Memorial Iris Garden bursts into bloom with thousands of varieties of irises during the month of May. Irises require special care and conditions in order to achieve the splendid blooms seen here. Many of the varieties are tall and the flower heads can be quite heavy. One day I was driving along the avenue and noticed the superintendent of the gardens scurrying about, tying the flowers to stakes. A big storm was predicted, one that would surely devastate the garden and ruin the entire three-week bloom season. There were thousands of flowers about to bloom, and only one person doing the staking. It seemed hopeless, but the gardener carried on, one flower at a time, doing what she could to save the garden from disaster. Fortunately the storm moved further to the east and the irises were saved. This song is inspired by the beauty and the spirit of this particular garden and gardener.
