Larry and I won a Telly!

When we started live-streaming from my Steinway, it was out of necessity. Concerts had been cancelled. The Covid virus was a global pandemic. We were homebound and without work to keep us occupied. Messaging everywhere told us we were the “unessential workers.” As artists, we were not needed like firefighters, doctors, nurses. We were lonely. We reached out to you, and told you that you could listen/watch me play piano from my living room. That maybe, that would make us all feel a little better. And you showed up. And so we continued to show up. We had technical difficulties and software to learn, and little by little, our “piano bars” became a beloved Friday night tradition for many of you. When concerts resumed and the live-streaming fad faded away into the pandemic distance, we kept going. Why? Because we realized that many of you cannot attend a Robin Spielberg concert in person. So many of you enjoyed the connection, conversation, and music tradition we had started so much, that you, the viewers, began to become friends with one another. That is what community building is all about. And that is what I love most about live streaming. Now, when I’m on tour, I meet many of you in the lobby after the show, and I love seeing people who have spent months—or even years—watching together online finally meet one another in person for the first time.

On a whim, and to bring a little more attention to what we have been doing, I submitted our series for a Telly Award, and it won Bronze in the category, “Best Non-Scripted Series.” This year, we expect to hit episode #300. We hope you’ll be watching!
