I’ve been thinking a lot about how music helps illicit memories in the listener. As I prepare for each episode of “Robin’s Piano Bar,” looking for songs that fit the theme of the episode, I stumble across so many tunes that instantly bring me to a certain time or place. I come upon “What I Did for Love” from A Chorus Line, and I remember sitting in the balcony of the Schubert Theater seeing that show at age 13 and how moved I was when that song was sung. I thumb through a “fake book” that has “It’s My Party” in it and am instantly transported to my childhood home. A stack of 45’s were left in the attic, this tune being one of them. How we loved spinning it. And then, of course, there are my own tunes, that chronicle my own life in a way. I am often told these compositions have special meanings to the people that hear them.
